Vehicle safety inspections: they can be a blessing in disguise

How many times have you dropped your car, truck or van off at your local garage or dealer to have the annual safety inspection done - and then gotten the dreaded phone call a couple of hours later?

You need new tires, you need new ball joints, brake rotors or shocks, or that rust hole in the door panel fixed?

Ouch! There's that pain in the wallet.

All of a sudden you see visions of dollar signs but you can't get away from it because the mechanic will scrape that nice little purple sticker off the inside of your windshield and replace it with the dreaded 'REJECTED VEHICLE' sticker and an order to get everything fixed.

There goes the income tax refund.

For many of us, the annual motor vehicle safety inspection is about as welcome as a doctor's probe of our most private parts. But think of the alternative.

Driving a car these days is already expensive with the price of gas and insurance. And after a winter like we just experienced, our family vehicles are beat to death by the potholes, bumps and gaping pits of peril. We hear the stories of broken ball joints and suspension components. We hear about how the road salt rusts out the bodies of our cars to leave holes the size of baseballs. And we have to swap out our winter tires for summers or all-seasons.

With all the costs involved in just keeping a car on the road, I often wonder how people can afford to drop hundreds, or thousands, of dollars on big stereo systems, aftermarket products, shiny wheels, big tires and lift kits on their custom cars. To each his own I guess.

And now the provincial government is about to embark on a round of public consultations to see how the safety inspection process can be "improved."

When I asked the premier about it last week, he seemed logical enough about it - the roads belong to everybody and all vehicles on the road should be safe. That means I should be safe driving in my car and I should also be safe around other people's cars.

The annual safety inspection has been a thorn in the side of many New Brunswickers for years and something to gripe about over coffee or a beer. And there are many opinions about rolling rust heaps on the road - vehicles held together with wire and duct tape that could never pass a real inspection. They must have a fake sticker, people say, or they bought one from a dishonest mechanic.

The Mounties say they still come across home-forged safety stickers from time to time. According to the law, all the stickers are accounted for and mechanics who pass a bad vehicle are supposed to be accountable if something goes wrong.
