Today in Florida history...

June 17th, 1942

Four German saboteurs from a U-boat landed on Ponte Vedra Beach today. They brought onshore weapons and explosives and buried them in the sand. Afterwards they dressed in swimming trunks and "beach gear" and made their way up to Jacksonville Beach where they caught a bus and took it downtown. There they checked in to the Florida Hotel.

Their mission was to link up with a second team of agents in New York. Then they would travel the country, killing citizens and blowing up electrical plants and creating whatever chaos they could. They never got the chance. All were arrested within three days, following the defection of one of the New York members, Walter Dasch, and all of them, with the exception of Dasch, were subsequently executed.

...invaded by Nazis in 1942. Bet you didn't know about that one.

Y'all have a peaceful Florida Friday and a wonderful weekend, Jacksonville!
