It's closing time for Johnson
Dustin Johnson still looks very much like he belongs on the campus at Coastal Carolina University.
His fire-engine-red cap is still a bit too straight, the flat-billed kind you work hard at to make look ultracool.
Johnson still flashes those trademark sideburns neatly under the cap and walks with an air of confidence that's palpable from across a room.
Making this seem even more like he'd still fit in on the South Carolina campus, Johnson played a practice round with former Coastal Carolina teammate Zach Byrd, who made the U.S. Open field here as the fourth alternate.
When Johnson arrived to his U.S. Open media session early Tuesday, he feverishly pressed buttons on his cell phone and nodded while a moderator chatted. It was a fine multitasking moment for the 26-year-old, who didn't seem to dread his spot on the hot seat.
One year ago, Johnson choked a three-shot, 54-hole lead at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. He frittered away all those shots by the time he arrived at the third tee. He triple-bogeyed the second hole and stumbled to an 82. Graeme McDowell won and had a dream season, while Johnson went on to have another gaffe in another major.
Johnson isn't the first guy to blow a lead in a major, and he won't be the last. He'll be in contention to win majors, but the question is whether he'll close one out. Johnson certainly isn't losing sleep over the Pebble disaster, which is pivotal in his return to the place that snatched his swagger for one Sunday.
"It didn't take very long at all," Johnson said of the time spent suffering over his final-round shenanigans. "I'm pretty sure I was done with it by Monday morning when I woke up."
Believe him. There's no Monday-morning quarterbacking for this guy.
"There was really nothing bad I could take from it, other than it was definitely a learning curve," Johnson said. "I definitely learned a lot from that round. I just tried to take the positives out of it and moved forward."
Johnson then could've gone into a playoff at the PGA Championship, but he grounded his club in a bunker on the 18th and was assessed a two-stroke penalty.
His ability to shrug off those costly mistakes, as though he failed a midterm for which he didn't study, is what makes Johnson the perfect candidate to win at Congressional Country Club this week. That, and the crazy driver Tiger Woods once said Johnson hits "stupid long" on the 7,574-yard course.

Whether you are looking for a Sixpence in Norway, a Cheese-cutter in New Zealand and Canada, a Dai cap in Wales, or a Scally cap in North America, what you are genuinely looking for is a flat cap, or a newsboy cap. Other names that have been attributed to newsboy caps include: bunnet, derby, driving cap, Gatsby cap, Golf cap, Hogans cap, Ivy Cap, Scone bunnet, and a Windsor cap. Regardless of the name, however, the basic shape and style of the newsboy cap is the same. A newsboy cap is a flat, gently rounded cap. It has a little brim in the front with a stiffer peak in the back. Usually the material employed to construct a newsboy cap is tweed or wool, but they have oftentimes been made of leather, vinyl and suede as well. The style of the newsboy cap has been dated as far back as the 14th Century in England where it was oftentimes worn by working class men. The style in the long run became considered to be casual country wear that was worn by wealthy English men for the duration of leisure actions which led to the cap being known as a gold cap.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, young boys living in North America and the United Kingdom considered the flat caps the height of being fashionable and the popularity grew exponentially. Eventually the flat caps became related with newsboys, and thence became known as newsboy caps. Newsboy caps are a reoccurring theme in usual culture and the fashion world. They became very usual in the 1980s with the punk and skinhead subcultures, and even by heavy metal singer Brian Johnsonn of AC/DC. Currently, the newsboy caps are again often seen being worn by A-list celebrities including Samuel L. Jackson, Dave Chappelle, Kate Moss and respective members of the hip hop and ever altering music subculture.
