Helping children stand up for themselves: The Grandmothers

Asserting oneself begins at birth. We parents quickly learn the difference between the loud, insistent screams our babies make and when they say, "I'm hungry, NOW" or, "Something really hurts!" Asserting oneself becomes all too evident during the toddler years when "Me do" and "No," provokes nods from adults as we mutter, "Ah, the terrible 2s."

This strong push toward independence, although it tries our patience, is generally understood to be a predictable part of growing up and we look forward to the next stage when the child insists on independence in more tolerable ways.

But what about a child like 4-year-old Sarah, who is so "nice" and so easily gives in to her friends? She lets another child grab the doll carriage she was playing with and doesn't hold on yelling "No," "Mine," or run to get the help of an adult. What about Vince who returns, uncomplaining, to building his block tower after two boys steal some of his blocks to build their own?

We are often grateful for children who aren't always raising a rumpus about their rights. We appreciate this and label them as "easygoing" and "nice." There are times when it nags us a little that our 4-year-old always gives in but we are grateful for a play date free of fights in our hectic, often overscheduled day.

It's even possible that we may attribute to our preschoolers an ability to philosophically weigh the importance of a situation the way a father did when watching his preschooler give in to a bully. "She's simply the early version of the adult who doesn't get 'hyper' about little things and decides most things aren't worth a hassle or fuss-up."

Repeated behavior like this should raise a red flag. What was really happening and how was Sarah feeling as she watched her carriage disappear? It is unrealistic to assume she could make on-the-spot decisions about what things are important to pursue and what might not be worth the emotional expenditure. At age 3 or even 4, children are unable to think this way. That doll carriage was an important part of Sarah's play as were Vince's blocks. They had chosen these things to play with, their imaginations were at work and they had plans in mind. Sarah might well have been imitating what her mommy does with the new baby while Vince was trying to build a block tower.

Just because they are so young and "only playing" does not mean the things they have chosen to do are not terribly important to them. This play is the model for how Sarah may one day treat her daughter; Vince may design schools. Will they continue to give in and be so "nice" when they are 10 and friends urge them to be mean to another friend or at 15 when they are offered drugs? Will they be afraid to say no?

“So You Think You Can Dance†2011: Top 20 Perform

I hated Ryan's baby-doll dress paired with those Doc Martins, but the dancing more than made up for it. It started with some strong popping moves, and evolved at one point into a somber, but striking cat-and-mouse chase game. At times, Ricky broke away

Notional Significance: Gorge

And then I'm struck by the unsettling innocence of a baby doll, impaled in either macabre humour or unhinged malice upon the railings of an unknowable depot. Back to the highway, and up again. The northeast slopes are raw and craggy, true gorge,

The Return of Rollerblades?
The Return of Rollerblades?

Perhaps it's the normalizing effect of these recent cultural references, or perhaps it's our re- acclimatization to babydoll dresses and grunge, but in New York this spring, Rollerblades seem less painfully out of place. I've noticed an unusual number
