L4D IRL: The real-life survival horror game
I’ve always thought I’d like to play a really intelligent, emergent survival horror game. Imagine a wide open city, with all the nooks and crannies of Deus Ex, only spread over a larger area. Lob in a bit of zombie-based unpredictability, a la Left 4 Dead, and top it off with Amnesia’s trick of not giving you a weapon with which to fight them. Your goal would be survival, as you snuck, stealthed and generally legged it around the infested city, perhaps even working co-operatively to outsmart the surprisingly clever undead.
A few weeks ago I got to play this game. In real life.
IGFest – the Interesting Games Festival – is an annual event in Bristol, England. A gathering of like-minded people takes over areas of the city and stages games of all sorts, and all scales. Some games take place on a single patch of grass and involve just a handful of players. Others are somewhat larger, such as 2.8 Hours Later , the festival’s headline event.
The idea is this. At 9pm on the evening of the game, 200 people gather on Bristol’s St. Nicholas Street and split into groups of eight. Each team is given a map, and, in intervals of around five minutes apart, sent off to locate the first actor involved in the staging of the game. On reaching her, you learn that there’s an infection, and it’s taking over all the residents of the city. Your only hope is to follow the trail to Resistance HQ, where, hopefully, there might be an antidote waiting.
I’ve always longed for a game that gave you an overarching goal, then gave you the impression of being left to get on with it, by whatever means you see fit. Of course, such a title would still have to essentially guide you, but by doing this as subtly as possible a developer can make you feel like the most resourceful player in the world, even if there’s only one logical way you’d really want to progress.
2.8 Hours Later had this down perfectly. Almost immediately after being released into the city, we chanced upon a distressed lady at the end of the road. She was babbling, incoherent. We needed to find the resistance, she said, but goodness knows where they were. The last she saw of anyone, they were heading across a certain bridge on the other side of town. Huddled around, we consulted the map. The bridge was probably a ten minute walk away, maybe a bit more if we took a longer route to try to avoid being eaten alive.

If you're in the UK, and another one happens in the future – which the organisers of IGFest certainly hope will be the case – I strongly urge you to get involved. Some images courtesy of event organisers SlingShot, via Flickr.
Israel is portrayed as a well-funded Goliath to the Palestinian David. And yet we conveniently forget that this David loads his slingshot with deadly ammo from Syria and Iran, and takes aim not at Goliath's military complex but at his defenseless citizens.

One thing that would be an easy change would be using 1.25-inch sling swivels rather than the one-inch swivels used on the gun now to accommodate available military slings. Given these minor complaints, the gun is nicely fitted with only a few casting
