Programs taking advantage of hotel-motel tax money
The increase, from 3 to 8 percent of a visitor’s hotel or motel bill, went into effect April 1, right at the start of the month-long Azalea Festival. Muskogee City Treasurer Jean Kingston said many Muskogee hotels and motels report their collections quarterly, so the full impact of the increase cannot be gauged. However, preliminary April figures show a 33 percent increase in hotel-motel taxes, from $35,613 to $47,394, Kingston said. Hewitt worked with the chamber to prepare invitations and information material for the Exchange Club’s district convention this weekend in Muskogee. The convention will attract 50 exchange club members from across Oklahoma and western Arkansas. Marvel Cave is located within Silver Dollar City theme park, which is just outside of Branson.
William Henry Lynch and his 2 daughters first opened the cave to tourists in 1894. In 1950 Hugo Herschend leased the cave and by 1960 Silver Dollar City was being built around the cave. Early explorers believed they would find marble in the cave, but bat guano was found instead. Bat guano (manure) was mined for 5 years and it was in demand as a prized fertilizer.
Marvel Cave is a wet limestone cave, and features a Cathedral room, which is the largest cave entrance room in the United States. While experiencing Missouri’s deepest cave, you will descend nearly 500 feet using stairs before riding out of the cave on a cable train. Marvel cave is an unforgettable experience!
