Rape Suspect Caught On Cellphone Video Arrested
OAKLAND, Calif. -- A man accused of robbing and raping a 28-year-old North Oakland woman who captured him on video with her cellphone was arrested Tuesday night, police said. The suspect, 47-year-old Dion McDaniel of Oakland, was suspected of breaking into the woman's home in the 900 block of Apgar Street on the morning of June 7 while she was home alone, police said. The woman confronted the intruder and filmed him on her cellphone, but after that he sexually assaulted her and then left with electronics taken from the home, police said. The video shows a man walking out of the house with a box full of property while the woman asks him how he got in and whether he will leave. The Oakland Police Department released the video and accompanying still images on June 9, asking the public to help identify the suspect. McDaniel, who court documents said also goes by "Darryl" sometimes, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday by Oakland police officers and parole agents. He was charged Wednesday with four felony counts of burglary, attempted oral copulation, forcible rape and forcible sodomy, according to court documents. Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Teresa Drenick said the rape and sodomy charges carry enhancements because they allegedly occurred during a robbery. McDaniel also has an extensive criminal history, including 11 prior felony convictions for drug and burglary offenses. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse at 661 Washington St. in Oakland, Drenick said.Woman Walking Alone At Night - News

In Defense of Slutwalks – NextGen Journal
Slutwalks have been sweeping the world.
Started in Toronto after a police officer suggested that women should not dress like sluts in order to avoid being raped, slutwalks are marches that aim to address perceptions of sexual assault. At these walks, women dress as they please, and march with signs bearing slogans such as “Don’t tell me what to wear; tell men not to rape.”
Thoughtful critics of the slutwalks claim that although women do not “deserve” to be raped, there is a level of responsibility in their actions. Some argue that fashion does have an affect like other factors; for example, some say that women shouldn’t dress inappropriately the same way women shouldn’t walk alone in a bad neighborhood at night. In other words, they should do everything they can to protect themselves against rape, similarly to the way that many people take measures to protect themselves against theft.
As Jessica Valenti, author of Full Frontal Feminism puts it , “Slutwalks aren’t the perfect form of activism.” They do involve the very loaded word “slut” that can trigger the very perceptions the protesters are trying to challenge. Yet at its core, founder of the marches Heather Jarvis describes the goal of slutwalks as one of shifting the “paradigm of mainstream rape culture.” The walks boldly accomplish this mission.
What baffles me the most about the criticism of the slutwalks are the awful analogies. What about rape is analogous to theft beyond the infiltration and violation of one’s space? Is it merely a coincidence that rape is considered a much more serious crime than theft within the courts? If not, why would the two be considered of the same scale and therefore related as such?
Rape often lacks the haphazard randomness, for lack of a better word, that many other crimes include. Rape and other forms of sexual assault are by definition aggressive and excessively violent crimes that involve targeting and predatory measures. Other crimes that are typically less violent, like theft, are usually not as physically and psychologically incapacitating as rape.
If there are any actions that scare the society we live in, they are random acts of extreme violence. Therefore for people to not live in constant fear of rapists, they seem to have to rationalize the rape, or explain it away. They appear to make subconscious and somewhat rational conclusions such as, that girl was raped because she was walking by herself, or because she was in a bad neighborhood or because she was dressed inappropriately. Yet, in a world where none of these conclusions actually directly correlate to the crime, these rationalizations are a level of victim blaming, and thus ineffective.
