Monument to a mammoth catastrophe

NEW YORK - On a hot summer day here a month ago, hundreds of workers were employed at the place where the World Trade Center towers once stood. If all goes according to schedule, the work is completed on the National September 11 Memorial there in the coming weeks, and the site will be dedicated Sept. 11, exactly 10 years after 2001, the crisis of terror.

Meanwhile, work continues apace. In the background on that day a crane could be seen holding something that looked like a huge white coffin, draped with an American flag on it. Firefighters solemnly in the spanking clean uniforms.

Michael Arad, an architect born in Israel who is in charge of designing the memorial site of eight acres, said the "coffin" in the truck from Ladder Company 3, 11 firefighters were killed in terrorist attacks. It was gradually lowered by crane into a well leading below the site of the memorial, where the memorial museum - expected to open next year - is under construction. The underground museum will present exhibitions commemorating the lives of victims of the attack, structural remains of towers and so on.

Arad, a partner in the architectural firm of Handel, is already looking back in satisfaction, although the process was long: financial problems, conflicts of interest among politicians, bureaucrats, designers and victims' families - none of the facts of the team is easier to work.

The site, designed in collaboration with the landscape architectural firm Peter Walker and Partners, is a memorial to the nearly 3,000 people killed at the WTC, the site near Shanksville, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon, and for six killed in an underground attack on the Twin Towers in February 1993.

The inauguration ceremony of the memorial 9 / 11 - originally scheduled to open in 2009 - will be attended by U.S. President Barack Obama, his predecessor, George W. Bush, the U.S. government officials, world leaders and families of victims, and just a few months after U.S. forces succeeded in killing al-Qaeda Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

The memorial designed by Arad has two huge, dark granite pool, 10 meters deep and covers about an acre, which were built where the towers.Cascades, said to be the greatest man that of North America, spill into square indentation in the center of the pool. Visitors can walk quietly among the approximately 400 trees around the two pools, each of which is lined with bronze panels bearing the names of the victims.
