Linebacker Hill returns to prove himself again

RENTON — One of the last remaining links to Seattle's Super Bowl team is also one of the least likely.

Linebacker Leroy Hill remains after two years in which his headlines outnumbered his highlights. He has been injured, he has been arrested and he has been a free agent twice since 2009 began, so you could say it's a surprise that he's back, but that wouldn't be quite right. He's never really gone anywhere.

"I've never stepped foot in another team's facility," said Hill, 28. "This is all I know. It's obviously what I wanted, and I'm here."

He's here as Seattle's starting weakside linebacker, the same spot where he started in Super Bowl XL. Cornerback Marcus Trufant is the only other player still with the franchise since that game.

While Seattle is rebuilding the roster for the future, Hill is looking to turn back the clock and show everyone why he was considered the most athletic linebacker on Seattle's roster from the moment he joined the franchise.

"He really wants to prove the point that he belongs here and all that," coach Pete Carroll said. "I think we get him, again, at a good time."

Two years of off-field incidents and injuries have overshadowed Hill's skills, a linebacker who can run like a tight end and hit like heavyweight. Performance has never been the problem for Hill. It's the injuries and off-field incidents.

A groin injury cost him five games in 2009, an injured knee sidelined him for most of training camp in 2010 and he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the first game he played last year.

He was arrested twice in a span of 16 months, first for misdemeanor drug possession in Georgia and then for domestic violence in Issaquah last year. Hill was not convicted of the assault charge in Issaquah, but the case did give Seattle the option of terminating his contract without paying his $6 million salary in 2010, which was otherwise guaranteed. Hill agreed to restructure his contract, his salary dropping to $2.2 million in 2010, the last year of the deal.

He has lost millions first because of the contract and then the two games he was suspended by the league. Plenty of people were surprised when Seattle re-signed Hill to a one-year contract for this season. Hill, however, wasn't one of them.

"I had a rough two-year stretch," Hill said. "I'm not surprised that I'm back. I know my abilities on the field. Everybody knows my abilities on the field."

Two years ago, he was paid to be one of the pillars of a defense, teamed with Lofa Tatupu and Aaron Curry to form what many expected to be among the league's premier linebacking trios.
