Miscouche school expansion on track
MISCOUCHE - Work on a $2.1-million expansion at Miscouche Consolidated School is on schedule and expected to be complete in time for the first day of classes.
"The work began in April 2011. The plan has always been for the majority of the construction to take place during the summer months and to be ready for Sept. 1," said Dave Gillis, Western School Board's director of business operations. "All indications are that we are on schedule in terms of timing and budget."
The 10,000-square-foot expansion will help ease overcrowding at the school and provide space for programs that the existing facility couldn't house.
Students were being bused to Summerside's Athena Consolidated for industrial arts and home economics, cutting into class time.
Last year 33 students in two Grade 6 classes were being taught by two teachers in one room and another class was set up in the school's library.
The school's population has been steadily growing and the addition of kindergarten classes last year throughout the province pushed numbers at the Western School Board school to 290.
The facility was built to accommodate a maximum of 200 students in grades 1 to 9.
Three portable classrooms will remain in use for the short term, he said.
The new addition, located northern end of the school, will house four classrooms, a music/band room, administrative offices and serve as the main entrance to the school.
"It will be a whole new facelift to the building," said Gillis. "The old offices in the old building will be modified for use by the school. The home ec area in the old section will be upgraded to accommodate any future programming. It's a pretty significant expansion."
It's the second major expansion and renovation at the school in 10 years.
In November 2001 ground broke on a $2.2-million 11,500-square-foot addition/renovation, which included two classrooms, a library/resource centre, computer lab and a music/multi-purpose room. Work was also done to the school's ventilation system and gymnasium.
The work was completed and addition opened in late 2002.
Gillis said the façade of the addition would match the exterior of the existing structure, which, he added, is in relatively good shape.
Wet weather did impact the work schedule, with some lost days, which contractor Williams, Murphy & MacLeod Ltd. compensated for by hiring more workers.

Get your home ready for winter | PF Blogging
As we’re approaching the end of summer many people’s thoughts will change to the winter months and the holiday season, but are you ready for the cold months that lie ahead?
When you think of the winter months you can’t help but think about money. Ramped up energy costs due to the cold weather and time off from work normally means that extra money will probably be spent.
So here are some quick tips on how you can “winterize” your home to try and reduce the extra costs:
Clean out the guttersMake sure that the gutters around your home are clean as they will tend to block up during the fall due to falling leaves and other debris.
If you don’t clean out the gutters then you risk your drains catching rain water which can then freeze and form an ice dam. If not dealt with, blocked gutters can seriously harm your home if water ends up dripping into the house.
Fix any leaky pipesWhilst checking the structure of your home and checking the guttering, make sure that you fix any leaky pipes so that water can safely flow inside and outside of your property.
Fix any drafty windows or doorsIn order to prevent heat loss you should make sure that all drafty windows and doors are checked and fixed accordingly. You should also check that your walls have proper insulation and that there are no cracks.
Heat loss during the winter months can seriously bump up the cost of your electricity bill so it’s important that this is addressed.
Investigate your furnaceMake sure your furnace is clean and working efficiently before the winter months arrive, you can try to do this yourself by carrying out some research, but you should get this carried out by a professional at least once a year.
You should also check the furnaces’ air filters as frequently as once a month, as clogged air filters will impact the air flow and reduce efficiency that may cost you money.
Deal with your fireplaceIf you have a fireplace then it’s a good idea to close the damper when the fireplace is not being used. By closing the damper you are trying to prevent cold wintery air from entering your home.
Reverse the ceiling fansThis is a tip that many people don’t think of, by reversing your ceiling fans it helps to push hot air downloads to delay the warm air from escaping, it helps to keep you warmer by re-circulating the hot air.
I hope the above tips will help you to “winterize” your home and save some cash this winter.
