Gazette sports editor lays down his notebook after 46 years

- Dave Wedeward arrived at the Rose Bowl four hours before the game on New Year's Day € ™ s in 1994.

The stadium was largely empty. Clear blue skies, 70 degrees.

Wedeward the Gazette € ™ s sports editor and journalist John McPoland sitting on the bench on the sidelines, soaking it in. It was a heady time. Wisconsin, returned to play in the game after a hiatus of sanctified over 30 years.

â € œThat ground was so lush and beautiful. I thought Iâ € ™ d died and gone to heaven, a € Wedeward said.

It would be impossible to find a list of 10 years to cover in the Gazette, Wedeward said. But the gleam in his 68 years cheeks as he told this story said it is certainly near the top of the list.

Wedeward will retire Nov. 1 after 46 years in the Gazette, 39 of those as sports editor.

He interviewed several famous names, from the White Soxâ € ™ s Eddie Stanky to Vikingsâ € ™ Bud Grant Marquette € ™ s Al McGuire, but the memories and friends hea € ™ s over the years in sports high school have a special place in Wedewardâ € ™ s heart.

In its early years, Wedeward leads to different communities on Sunday. It was important to learn about these cities, he said.

For similar reasons, he wrote a column on sport in high school for years. He could have given to someone else, but the column he has kept in touch.

â € œI value the relationship Iâ € ™ have been with these communities, â € he said.

Evansville, Milton, Orfordville, Fort Atkinson, Clinton, Delavan, Elkhorn € "and the list goes on. Wedeward has stories about all Thema €" the players and coaches and fans that filled the gym and stand through the decades.

Hea € ™ ll tell you Evansville € ™ s glory years of basketball late 1960s, Edgerton football in the â € ™ 80 and the quality of teams Whitewater High School: â € Œno is what sport that it was the Whippets were good, and they were classy.â €

He recites chapter and verse on the rivalry football Janesville-Beloit largest and most recent but no less intense rivalries intra-Janesville Craig and Parker.

â € œIf we start remembering these Populaire € "itâ € ™ s no end, a € Wedeward said.

Edgerton will always be special.Itâ € ™ s where Wedeward was born and raised and where he started writing sports.

Sports were huge in the family Wedeward. His mother was a cum laude graduate of UW-Madison who has taught high school English, German and Latin. His father, who managed a grocery store, the return of World War II and, with his friends, got subscriptions to Badger games. They were also followers of athletics Edgerton High and state tournament basketball school.

Edgerton book festival stars "Little House" actress

One of the featured authors at this year's Edgerton Sterling North Book & Film Festival will be Alison Arngrim, best known for her portrayal of the "incredibly nasty character" Nellie Oleson on the hit TV show "Little House on the Prairie."
She will chat with fans, speak about her career and sign books Sept. 24 at the sixth-annual festival.

Arngrim will be among some 30 featured authors at the festival, an event devoted to the wonders of the written word.

Each year, the fest has swelled the 4,900 population of Edgerton by a factor of roughly 1,000, as visitors from throughout the Midwest arrive in the southern Wisconsin city to connect with the writers who attend the free-to-patrons event.
Edgerton's best-known citizen Sterling North (1906-1974), the multi-million bestselling author of the 1963 memoir "Rascal," was raised at a home at 409 W. Rollin St., which has since become a museum.

North, the literary editor of newspapers in Chicago and New York, was also the author of some 30 other books.

The festival - which in past years has starred famed writers like Malachy McCourt, Jane Hamilton, David Rhodes, Kevin Henkes, Chris Van Allsburg, Ben Logan, Jaqueline Briggs Martin, and Helen Thomas - began in Sterling North's memory and continues to keep his legacy green.

Arngrim, also a standup comedian and bestselling author, continues to amuse audiences in many film, television and stage appearances. Her latest movie work includes roles in the independent movies "For the Love of May" with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal and "The Last Place on Earth" with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis
Diller.

Arngrim, who appears to be loved in France almost as much as she was once despised in America, also recently starred in her first French film, Jean Pierre Mocky's "Le Deal."

Both her one-woman comedy stage show and her recently published memoir are titled "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch."

Arngrim lives in California with her husband of 17 years, musician Bob Schoonover, of the Rock-n-Roll band "Catahoula," and their two cats, Hannibal and Clarice.

She takes pride in the fact that so many people enjoyed hating her as a girl and is more than happy to give them the opportunity to do so in the future, according to her web site.
