It is hard for me to believe that this time last week, I had just made it to the summit of Mt. Rainier. A mixture of altitude, exhaustion and probably some fear in those moments, make the memories hazy at best. The experience at times feels like it was a dream, one with a happy ending, but a dream nonetheless.
I almost feel as if there are not adequate words to describe the experience. I'm not quite sure how to paint a picture of vast beauty, frustration, pushing physical and mental limits and the feeling of exhilaration after reaching the top.
The most common question I've been asked, is how this adventure compares to running a marathon. I know this much, the mountain wins that race.
Don't get me wrong, running 26.2 miles is mentally and physically draining, but putting one foot in front of the other on solid ground doesn't compare to a vertical climb roped to other people.
Make no mistake about it, climbing Mt. Rainier was not a "hike". Because of the abnormally cold and snowy spring, we were in hard, plastic climbing boots from the get go. And although the snow made it easier to feel steady on the steeper inclines and in the higher elevations, it made the first 4,700 vertical feet (or 4.5 miles) a tough, six hour climb.
On day one (Sunday for me), you ascend 4,700 vertical feet from the Paradise parking lot (elevation 5,400) to Camp Muir (10,188). The climb took about six hours, including food and water breaks.
The first hour may have been the most frustrating. I struggled with the weight of my pack and the way it made me feel off balance. It also took some time to get used to the footing of a hard shell boot and the right way to walk (and not fall) during the uphill climb.
When we arrived at Camp Muir it became obvious things were...basic! Our accommodations included a bunk house with foam sleeping pads for our sleeping bags and an outhouse.

Sleep is not just a break from the day's work: when we sleep without problems improves our mood, our memory and we prevent physical and psychological ailments, as well as lengthen our lives. A study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recently found that sleep is one of the secrets of longevity. As a follow-up conducted on 2,800 people, the results showed that about 65% of those who say they sleep well or very well for at least 7, 5 hours per night or the sum of all day, have a better quality of life. The older, they had 100 years of life, relatively good quality of sleep, while those who were between 65 and 79 described their rest and a little less sleep. Taking into account that respondents had different health variables, socioeconomic and place of residence, it was determined that those who suffer from chronic insomnia are three times more risk of premature death than those who do not have that problem. The research also confirmed the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, United States, which involved some 2,200 people, the study's findings were presented this year at the 24 th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, in Texas.
