Unique creations

LOSALINI Tautau Manufolau's leisure activity of collecting different kinds of jewellery and jazzing it up to create unique ensembles has now turned into a source of income for her.

And her creations of earrings, bracelets and necklaces are fast gaining popularity with orders now being received from abroad as well.

The 30-year-old mother of one began making jewellery as a pastime since giving birth to her son.

Ms Manufolau used jewellery from her mother's collection, those she collected herself and those that her friends and family send her from abroad.

"I started with two to three necklaces a week. A good friend of mine has a booth at the Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and she sold it for me," Ms Manufolau said.

"It started selling and then I increased it to five pieces a week," she said.

"For Valentines Day, my husband created an online page for Tropical Jewel Fiji to showcase some of my creations, so late March, the products were online," Ms Manufolau said. "My first sale was to a Tongan lady who lives in Illinois in the United States, and another order was by a Fijian woman in Santa Rosa. It started like that," she said.

Since going online, Ms Manufolau has had to supply her products to customers in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, to complement her growing clientele in Fiji.

To date, she is working round the clock to meet demands from a five-star hotel that asked for a range of creations for its boutique. Another hotel has also expressed its interest in carrying Ms Manufolau's creations.

Ms Manufolau said the jewellery market, particularly for her tropical-influenced creations, was a lucrative business.

"It is going very well and the demand is high," she said, adding she looked forward to expanding her business in the next five years.

Ms Manufolau's creations are displayed on the social network, Facebook; her price range vary but the pieces all go for less than $50.
