Lady sang the blues: why Amy Winehouse shouldn't be remembered for Rehab

Had a kind of moroseness, a self-prophetic gloom, that I think Winehouse always carried within her.

On the surface, it was a song about letting go of a lover who always belonged to another woman.

But scratch just a bit deeper , and it tells us more of how the woman beneath the beehive saw herself and her place in the world.

"And I tread a troubled track, my odds are stacked, I go back to black." Listening to it now, you can't help but wonder if she was talking about more than just a love affair gone sour.

In the black-and-white video , Winehouse leads a funeral procession....for her own heart.

Back to Black sounds like the most confessional song of a very confessional album -- seemingly a paradox given it's one of a few tracks Winehouse didn't write by herself.

This one she co-wrote with the album's producer Mark Ronson -- a man who described her as his "musical soulmate." And I can't help but wonder if it's precisely Ronson's presence that drew out of her that honesty.

Left to her own devices, Winehouse plays her trick card -- a bit of a clown, all bravado and lewd humour, and t hings rhyming with "tanqueray."

It's like she's saying "My life is a mess, but it's all cool, man."

When faced with the mirror of another songwriter, she turns more honest. She understands the anatomy of pain, the way it works its way into people's hearts, with a surgeon's precision.

"And life, is like a pipe....and I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside"

Should we be remembering Amy for Rehab?

But when it comes to the song that defined the essence of the troubled, talented woman, I'd say it was Back to Black. From the deep grooves and sad, snaggle-toothed chords of its opening bars, you knew you were in for something different than the rest

For me, Rehab might have set a benchmark for pop, but it is the more lovelorn songs that people will still be playing 20 years from now — the hypnotic minor chords of Back To Black, the guilt-ridden You Know I'm No Good and the gut-wrenching Love Is A

Heading straight back to the classics!  Back In Black is a great example of how to chain together our open power chords (last week’s lesson.)  If you want to know more about open power chords please  reference the “Open Power Chords” lesson for more detail for the more commonly used shapes.

I dig this riff for many reasons: heavy low-end chords, tasty pentatonic leads, the challenge of keeping the chords crisp and clean…good times!  Like all things get it under your fingers first, then try and add the heel mutes and chain the pieces together.
