About four years ago, Phil Evett rescued a mangy, emaciated dog hanging around the gate to his 20 acres of scrub and mesquite and live oak near Blanco. It was a minor act of heroism for which he was later rewarded with a bad fall and a broken arm.

“Not the dog's fault,” he is quick to claim.

Evett remains unsatisfied with the work of the “bonesetter” — he uses words like that, in a buttery British accent. But a rejuvenated Gus, an audacious mix of Great Dane and Shar-Pei (“Can you imagine the union?” Evett asks, wide-eyed) has become a fixture around the place, as vital as the pump that draws crisp water, like inspiration, from the deep Hill Country well.

“He's got fingers,” swears Evett of Gus, who was at the vet getting a dip on a sweltering afternoon last week. “I was thinking of buying him a ukulele.”

The tumble — he tripped on Gus' leash — and resulting shoulder injury left Evett at a “low ebb,” he acknowledges.

“I confess it wasn't the happiest of times,” he says. “It was my carving arm, and I couldn't work. But I knew it would get better. I had to be patient.”

Within a few months, the sculptor was back in his studio, coaxing magic out of wood.

Ask any of his friends, and after they get through telling you how charming he is, how he makes them laugh, what a fine human being he is, they'll tell you work is what Evett does, for more than 70 years.

His wife, Joanne, takes out a tattered notebook in which he keeps track of his work. Last year, he completed 12 sculptures, mostly abstractions of the female form, beautifully contoured and immaculately joined, some 6 and 7 feet tall; he is on a similar track for 2011. They stand like angels at a cocktail party around the light-filled, airy gallery space he added a few years back to his small, metal-roofed house off Old Kendalia Road.

Evett turned 88 in February.

“God made two beautiful things, in my opinion, and not necessarily in this order: trees and women,” he proclaims with a Shakespearean sense of majesty, though he says his accent is part Cockney, part East Anglia.

Painter Bill Bristow has known Evett since 1960, when they both joined the art faculty at Trinity University .

“Basically, throughout his life, he's been a worker; he's not happy unless he's working,” Bristow says. “He's always been a consummate craftsman who has a great respect for a job well done. He's become like a brother to me over the years; there's a bond there that's undeniable. His wit has always cured me and energized me.

It's more like his unruly eyebrows. “Cutoffs†— wood scraps — litter the floor in drifts, literally 4 or 5 inches deep in some places. “They'll come in handy,†he says, picking up a length of mesquite, or maybe mahogany. “See,
