In Middletown, a dairy farm is transformed

This 19th-century dairy farm in Middletown has been converted into a remarkable residential compound. The original barn is now the main house, with a distinctive clock tower, while the 1850s farmhouse, now used as a guest “cottage,” is a substantial home in its own right.

“I couldn’t get the phone out of my pocket fast enough to make the call,” he said. At the time, houses were flying off the real estate market. Barrows said he begged the owner for an early appointment. “I came in, saw the property, and I was just awestruck,” he said. Barrows bought the house that day.

Since then, he eliminated a garage and parking area at the back of the house and replaced them with an in-ground pool, an expanded bedroom and a large, modern office/recreation area with multiple French doors that lead out to the pool and patio.

“This is a unique property, to be this close to Newport, to have this size house, with this much property and this much privacy,” Barrows said.

Barrows, a stock trader and software developer, said he is selling the house to pursue business opportunities outside the state.

The Hillside Farm compound is approached by a long drive, illuminated with carriage lamps, that ends in a circle with a fountain, surrounded by plantings, in the center.

Grouped around the circle is the original farmhouse, the main house and a two-car garage. The tranquil brook passes beneath a deck located behind the garage.

The main house, painted yellow with deep green shutters, is designed in three different styles. “As you go to different parts of the house, it feels like different environments,” Barrows said.

The main entry leads to the more formal section of the house, which includes a fireplaced living room with built-in shelving and a bay window overlooking the driveway.
