Pastor Kenneth Smith first traveled to the Philippines in 1997 as a Bible school student and there, while sharing the Gospel and praying for people who sleep on pieces of cardboard if they’re lucky, or on the bare ground if they’re not, he saw his first miracle.

“I saw a man, blind from birth, his eyes opened up in front of me,” Smith said.

Miracles it seems, favor those who have little more than faith. In the Philippines, where an estimated 67 percent of a population of 94 million exist on less than $2 a day, Smith finds a fertile field for evangelical effort.

“When you’re hungry, no one has to twist your arm to eat,” said Smith, youth pastor at Mount Moriah Christian Center in Waukegan. “When you’re sick, you don’t turn down the cure. We preach, and they’re eager to believe.”

Smith and six congregants will visit Alabang, a town outside of Manila, during a 10-day mission trip to the Philippines. They leave Friday. The group, which includes two medical professionals, will offer both medical assistance and evangelism, and will work out of host church New Life Center.

This is Smith’s fourth trip to the country, a conglomeration of some 7,000 islands in East Asia.

“There are two types of people in the Philippines,” Smith said. “The well to do and the poor.”

During a visit in 1999, Smith stopped in the slums of Tondo, a district of Manila, to minister to children foraging for food in a festering garbage dump. Three miles away, he stopped at another town — “a pretty city” — where people were barbecuing and tossing Frisbees.

“I sat on the bus and cried,” Smith said.

Joining Smith on this trip are: his son, Kenneth Smith II, 18, of North Chicago and AhDream Smith, 21, his daughter; Josiah Lillard, 18, of Waukegan; Myna Jenkins, a registered nurse, of Zion; Dr. Pamela Smith, his sister; and Asha Woodfolk, 17, of Chicago, his niece.
