Lorries 'still causing havoc' in Much Hadham

LORRIES delivering landfill for a long-overdue expansion at Great Hadham Golf and Country Club are still causing chaos for neighbours, it was claimed this week.

Although the vehicles are not meant to turn up during the 8.30am to 9.30am rush hour, residents and councillors in nearby Much Hadham say the rule is still being broken.

The village’s parish council is holding an extraordinary public meeting to discuss the situation on Monday (June 13).

Concerns will be forwarded to planning authority East Herts District Council, which imposed the restriction on Herts County Council’s highways department’s advice when it approved the revamp in 2005.

As the  reported when complaints were made last year, the work – which started in summer 2008 – was due to finish three months ago.

But because of the recession and a drop in waste from the building trade, which it is using to carry out the landscaping, it is now unlikely to end until this time next year.

Parish chairman Cllr Martin Dillon said: “The permission was for 90 movements in and out per day, and only from the direction of Bishop’s Stortford – but not all of them do that, which is a breach of permission.

“They adhere to the timing restrictions more than they used to, but often you’ll see lorries going along [the B1004] at 9.25am at about 15mph – which they’re entitled to do, but it drives motorists insane!

“The other issue is that deliveries of spoil to the site were expected to have been completed a long time ago – but with the downturn, there’s still more left to deliver. We’ve got to ask how long this is likely to continue.”

Club secretary Ian Bailey expressed disappointment at not being told about Monday’s meeting.

He said: “This is the first time I’ve heard any news regarding the situation. You would have thought that, if they had concerns, they might express them to the club so that we can do something.

“The traffic management scheme was agreed when the club was given permission – and I’d also point out that the parish council actually recommended supporting the project at the planning stage.

“Whilst we do appreciate that such a significant development may impact on the local community, we’ve taken every effort to ensure that the impact is minimised.
