Everybody Wants To Survey Me

On good days, I like to think of myself as an opinion leader, someone whose experience, perspective, and sagacity warrant close attention.

Clients, journalists, and investors sometimes interrogate me closely on my views of this or that company’s technologies, products, or prospects in the market.  I’m flattered, of course.

But before I let it all go to my head, I should probably take stock of a few items.

One, my Twitter following is not all that large.  If I were really an opinion leader (or I had been smart enough to get in on the ground floor), I would surely have tens of thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of followers by now.

Such facts act as a check on my ego.

Also, many of the outfits seeking my opinion don’t really care what I think.  Or, at least, they don’t really care that it’s me who has the opinion.  They’re just desperately polling me, my uncle, and any stray cat they can find to get enough information to tweak or tighten their business model, product features, or service experience.

It turns out that market research, that hallowed tool of the analyst community, has become remarkably easy to do, and everyone’s doing it — all the time.

SurveyMonkey, a free online survey tool, is a great example of the democratization of market research.  The tool takes about 10 minutes to set up and lets the budding market researcher “just open a browser and go,” as the company says on its Website.  For the totally clueless, SurveyMonkey has templates to follow, and quick, modular components allow the surveyor to run multiple choice, matrix of choices, rating scale, text box, and demographic questions under the noses of his or her target respondents with a simple click of a button.

Google also provides a blank survey template in Google Docs.  Couple of button clicks to modify and “personalize,” and you’re off to the races.

But it doesn’t have to be all that high tech.  Some folks just pop a few questions into an email, and they’re good to go.

So, unfortunately for my self-esteem, it’s not my opinion that they want.  It’s everybody’s and anybody’s.  Something to justify the expenditure on this or that and hopefully guide the ship away from the rocks.

Who’s doing all this surveying?  In the past month alone, I’ve received requests from just about everybody I’ve done any business with.

Aptix, my Web hosting service, asks me to rate its service personnel after every “event.”  I have a problem with Microsoft Exchange or trouble bringing up a fresh client, it’s survey-worthy.
