Cleaning Refrigerator Water Dispenser

Same old silt, different day

It's my sister's birthday and I've already sent her a happy birthday message on Facebook apologising that her present bought the day before won't be arriving on time, mainly down to the fact that shopping and posting things is rather more complicated these days. In a last ditch attempt to get her something vintagey or retro cool I've stopped into the City Mission charity shop a couple of blocks from my work in Sydenham, on my lunch break. My plan is to see if there are any cool sunglasses she might like, but find myself distracted by a stack of table linen. I am just eyeing up some wonderfully awful teatowels when...

Whoa! The whole shop is shunting from side to side. Argh! I'm essentially in a large room filled with china and glassware and other household goods and there is absolutely NOTHING to hide under. I make for the door and hang onto the doorframe. As I look outside I can see power lines swinging in wide arcs that make it look like a giant game of double dutch is about to take place.

After the shaking stops the "shop ladies" advise everyone to go outside. I hold the door open for the five or so other people inside. All along the street small groups of workers are standing out on the footpath looking around, and in some cases lighting up cigarettes. I chat with one of the shop ladies briefly, she's concerned about there being an aftershock (we've been through this before) and give her what I hope is a reassuring pat on the arm before haring off back to work.

I've decided to do this because a) I doubt anyone is particularly interested in selling me a filled roll right now and b) my phone is on my desk and no doubt there are a couple of people who will be trying to check that I'm okay. I don't want to worry them by not answering.

1.05pm

On my way back to work, I stop in at my friend Dora's workplace which is just around the corner from where I am. I am encouraged by the fact that Dora is quite calm and that they have power. She offers the use of her office phone for calling people but I realise I don't know most of the numbers I'd want to call. I head off back to work.

1.12pm

I get back to work to find my friend and colleague Tulip a bit shaken but otherwise fine. She was alone in the office so she's being very brave. I put in quick phone calls to the Silver Fox and my mum. Tulip is finding it difficult to focus and neither of us have had lunch yet so we both go out and grab something from the sandwich shop on the corner. When we get back we debate going home but decide not to and "entertain" ourselves by reading reports of damage as they flood in from the internet. I was vaguely aware of dust in the air when I stepped out of that charity shop doorway and am not at all surprised that there's been further building damage.

Refrigerator should be cleaned regularly to keep it clean and germ free. Cleaning the ice and water outlets should also be cleaned to insure it is clean and safe to dispense form. If the water reservoir is allowed stay wet and dirty, it can look and smell terrible. A little skill is needed to clean the outlets and the reservoir. Only safe cleaners should be used to clean the ice and water dispensing parts.

Empty the ice dispenser by depressing the ice dispenser lever to expel all of the ice. Let about half of the vinegar flow through to flush out any dirt.

Next, depress the water lever on the water dispenser. This will allow the vinegar to run through the water supply pipes and tubes getting a complete cleaning. Keep the button pressed until all the vinegar has ran through into the reservoir. If the reservoir is small, empty it as it gets full.

Dip a toothbrush into the vinegar in the reservoir. Scrub the spouts that the ice and water flows through with the old toothbrush. Continue scrubbing with the toothbrush. Be sure to clean the entire ice and water dispensing center with vinegar. Pay close attention to the corners of the reservoir.

Remove the reservoir tub. Rinse well in the sink with warm water. Replace.
