New Balance Nationals, Day 1 -- The trip to the track, and then some
Good morning everyone. As I type I am bound for Greensboro, N.C., and the New Balance Nationals.This is my second straight trip into the land of tobacco and sweet tea. Can't wait to see New Jersey's best and brightest put the hammer down on the rest of the country.
Sitting on a tour bus with the air conditioner stuck on the ``dry ice'' setting for a 10-hour drive to the campus of North Carolina A&T. When I get off this bus and pick up my media credential, the first order of business will be to duct tape several hair dryers to a high jump standard and lie underneath it to thaw out, and also to get this ``Grade A, Top Choice'' sticker off my cheek, which was slapped on while I slept. The bus driver thinks the vehicle is an interstate meat locker.
The two best parts about making a mid-morning stop at a Waffle House in West Virginia are, in order, disembarking the meat locker to embrace the warmth of the sun, and my waitress, Nicole. Told Pope John coach Brian Corcoran that I'd pick up a Waffle House T-shirt for assistant coach Nick Dilworth as a gag gift, since Nick drove down to NC a day earlier and wasn't enduring the Frozen Victory Tour.
But Nicole turned my gag upside down with her southern hospitality when she said, ``We don't have any T-shirts. Would you like to wear my pin?''
It says, ``America's Place. Waffle House.''
So Nicole turned the tables on me and, somehow, I am now in a long distance relationship with a young lady who slings scrapple for a living. What's the worst that could happen? We become pen pals and she sends me coupons for ``Bert's Famous Chili'' at ``The World's Biggest Server of HashBrowns?''
For those of you who know me, please don't tell my wife. My four kids will be psyched about the hash browns, though.
I'm about to scan the NBN entry list to set up my weekend schedule. I'll be back with some real track news. Until then, I have to figure out if the guy next to me is a coach bound for nationals or a frozen pork loin. I guess I'll find out in Greensboro.
After a quick perusal of the girls entries (the girls were listed first; I'll get to the boys in a little bit); here's how the schedule shakes out:
Tonight at 7:55, Bishop Eustace's Holly Bischof and Washington Township's Dina Iacone battle in the 5,000. Bischof and Iacone were the 2-3 finishers in the Meet of Champions 3,200.
Friday and Saturday is a whirlwind of action.
