Former West Brunswick football standout Hill switching schools again
The West Brunswick High School graduate did not return calls to discuss his move to Los Angeles Valley College in California, and the whole situation has left everyone befuddled.
"I have never heard of anything like Alfy has done,'' said Chad Simmons, South regional recruiting manager for Scout.com.
Hill, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end, was ESPNU's No. 61 prospect and recruiting guru Tom Lemming's 64th best player in the nation in the Class of 2010. Sammy Batten, who does the Superprep Magazine rankings for North Carolina, had him the fourth-best recruit in the state.
He chose Alabama but, before the fall semester, the NCAA Clearinghouse ruled him ineligible after questioning an online course he took at West Brunswick. So he transferred to East Carolina last fall as a non-qualifier, meaning he would have sat out a year and went on scholarship this fall.
However, Hill withdrew from ECU and signed with Itawamba Community College in Mississippi in November. He stayed through the spring semester and is on the move again.
"It has been crazy,'' West Brunswick coach Jimmy Fletcher said. "I can tell you I have been around it for 25 years and I have never had a player do this.''
Hill's saga is strange because he is doing it in reverse order. Cam Newton, the top overall selection in April's NFL Draft, followed a similar path, though. Newton transferred from Florida to Blinn College and won a national junior college title before moving to Auburn and leading the Tigers to the Bowl Championship Series title.
"Alfy has had a lot of obstacles thrown his way by the NCAA that most kids don't have to tackle,'' Batten said. "There is no question he is a Division I football talent, but he has to get those academics straight.''
Before transferring back to a Division I program, Hill must graduate from junior college.
"Academically he was doing fine,'' Fletcher said of Hill's semester at Itawamba. "We just have to get him to stay in one place.''
Despite all the moving around, Hill owns all four seasons of eligibility, including two in junior college. Depending on how many of his classes transfer, he can graduate in December 2012 and transfer in January 2013 to a major program.
During a recent interview with TigersIllustrated.com, Hill mentioned Clemson, Alabama, Kentucky and N.C. State as possible destinations. He also pointed out Alabama has the inside track, followed by Clemson and N.C. State.
