Tougher Minnesota DWI Law Coming July 1
The countdown is on for tougher DWI punishment in Minnesota. On July 1, a new Minnesota law will target drivers who have multiple driving-while- intoxicated charges. The new DWI law aims to curb DWIs in Minnesota by requiring repeat DWI offenders to have breath-testing ignition lockout devices on their vehicles.
The changes are primarily aimed at routine offenders. Prior to 2002, Minnesota laws did not address repeat DWI offenders and DWI was a mere "gross misdemeanor". With the new changes, four DWI arrests in a 10-year period will add up to a felony charge -- and serious prison time.
In Minnesota, one in 17 drivers has two or more DWI arrests.
The new Minnesota DWI law, which is set to begin July 1, will make breath-testing ignition lockout devices a punishment option for repeat DWI offenders as well as first-time DWI offenders who blow 0.16 percent or more. The device, a portable breath tester, keeps vehicles from being started if the blood-alcohol level is above 0.02 percent. The anti-DWI devices will be monitored remotely.
The anti-DWI devices cost $50 to install and remove, and another $100 a month to monitor, though costs could fall as use of the devices increases.

Repeat drunk drivers in Minnesota will be forced to use an ignition interlock device in their vehicle after July First. It’s part of new, tougher DWI laws meant to reduce the number of drunk drivers in the state.
The device forces the driver to take a breath test before the car will start.
Kevin Voss is an Assistant Stearns County Attorney who handles most of the county’s DWI cases. He says the change also covers first-time offenders who’s blood alcohol level is twice the legal limit. he says eligible offenders can opt to get their driver’s licenses back by installing the Ignition interlock device.
For those drivers who have had DWI’s before, Voss says it will be mandatory. He says the Minnesota Department of Public Safety wants to make sure repeat drunk drivers are not consuming alcohol before they get behind the wheel. Voss says those offenders will be required to get the device before they get their licenses back.
Voss says along with reducing the number of drunk drivers, the state is also trying to make it so people can drive with a valid driver’s license and be monitored at the same time.
The cost of the device is $50 to install, a $100 monthly monitoring fee and another $50 to remove the interlock system afterward.
