Mejia's mock Draft: Dillemas everywhere as countdown begins
Yep, this year is especially difficult. However, since there are so many tight calls where franchises are being pulled in different directions, this could wind up as an important draft even with everyone bad-mouthing it as supposedly awful. There are a few strong players people continue to doubt, not to mention some decisions that will look especailly egregious in the years to come.
Here's the latest as of early on June 17:
1. Cleveland - Kyrie Irving, G, Duke: He's only working out for the Cavs and will get his name called first even though Derrick Williams may make more sense. For Baron Davis, it appears all the good will that he built up since arriving from L.A. will depend on his willingness to play a mentor role going forward.
2. Minnesota - Derrick Williams, F, Arizona: Between talk that the Timberwolves will move this pick or consider moving Michael Beasley, expect the consensus No. 2 prospect in this draft -- No. 1 in my eyes -- to be selected in this spot. He hasn't hit his ceiling yet, and given the rapid growth demonstrated last season, deserves the benefit of the doubt that he'll indeed be an impact player.
3. Utah - Enes Kanter, C, Turkey: Going Brandon Knight this high in the draft strikes me as a gamble, so all the chatter that the Jazz have made up their minds to take him over Kanter simply doesn't make sense. The Jazz worked out Kanter early and it would surprise me if they don't look to bring him back next week after impressing in Chicago.
4. Cleveland - Jonas Valanciunas, C/F, Lithuania: If Irving is the top selection, it intensifies the emphasis on grabbing another big man since the Cavs were so thin up front once Anderson Varejao was lost. Valanciunas will be bought out of his deal with his domestic club, ensuring no Ricky Rubio-type concerns derailing this decision. Jan Vesely could be the choice here as well.
5. Toronto - Brandon Knight, G, Kentucky: The dillemma for the Raps is whether to go for another wing athlete to pair with the still developing DeMar DeRozan or to draft a lead guard that pushes Jose Calderon out, especially since the Spaniard would undeniably be the top candidate for amnesty if that's included in the next CBA. With Leandro Barbosa exploring his options , Jerryd Bayless is the lone point guard guaranteed to be back, so it makes sense that Toronto would be interested in a true point guard like Knight. Ironically, he was coached in college by the diminutive lights-out scorer who was the face of the franchise in its inception, Damon Stoudamire, to whom Walker has been compared. Vesely and Kawhi Leonard are the wing options, so Toronto has an opportunity to help itself at No. 5 if it makes the right decision.

Phoenix Florists and Other Specialty Businesses Tourists Ask About

As a taxi driver in Phoenix, the questions I’m usually asked by visitors are about the Cardinals, but sometimes Phoenix florists, jazz clubs, gyms, hair salons or optometrists come up. Usually, I’m stumped. Even when they’re halfway across the country on business or on vacation, some people need to find things that I would never have any reason to look for myself. I have perfect vision, so why would I know who the best optometrist is to repair the eyeglasses you sat on in the airplane? I’ve probably driven past hundreds of places that sell, repair or prescribe eyeglasses, but I couldn’t tell you which one is more reputable. The same thing with Phoenix movie theaters. I rent movies, so how would I know which theaters have 3-D projection. Look it up online!
Here’s a perfect example of the things tourists spring on me without warning. I’m at the airport picking up a fare, a couple who are visiting from Boston. I know that because they tell me as soon as I load their luggage in the trunk. Five minutes into the drive to their hotel, they’ve told me their kids’ names, their dog’s name and the name of the street they live on. The husband, Hank, has also let me know that they’re visiting the city for their tenth wedding anniversary. At a stoplight, he taps me on the shoulder and tells me to take him to the finest florist Phoenix AZ has to offer. I think about it for a minute and pull over at a gas station where a guy is selling bunches of fresh flowers out of a laundry bucket.
Hank is not amused. I explain that if he was looking for the best place to buy Cardinals tickets from a scalper, or the bar that has the biggest selection of beer on tap, then I can help him out. I know most of the hotels too. I even now where a few of the biggest Phoenix movie theaters are, although I can’t tell you which of those has the best prices, the best popcorn or the most comfortable seats. However, I know virtually nothing about Phoenix florists.
Fortunately, Hank has his iPhone.
