Well, the political season is here whether or not we welcome it in our everyday lives. There are announced candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, attorney general, supervisor, senator, state representative, superintendent of education, Justice Court judge and constable, just to name a few.

Some may define a politician as "one actively engaged in government or politics.: Others might use the definition of "wise in promoting a policy" with the words "shrewdly and tactful" thrown in for good measure.

As we try to decipher the relevance of all the various platforms and promises of the candidates for public office in our own lives, very few of us have ever considered ourselves a "politician," simply because we may never have been an announced candidate for public office.

But we are all politicians whether we know it or not. Unless most of us have been living in seclusion during our lifetime, we have consciously or unconsciously actively been involved in politics.

To simplify it further, it can be said that there are four kinds of politicians: elected, selected, anointed and appointed.

Surely you are now or have been one of the preceding sometime in your life.

1) If you are or have ever been on a committee at your church, you are a politician. Some of the best politicians are born and nurtured while serving on church committees.

2) If you have been involved with a civic, fraternal or public service organization, then yes, you are a selected, anointed or appointed politician.

3) If you have ever involved with youth activities (scouts, baseball, soccer, swimming, etc.), you are a politician and probably a good one. When a selected or anointed coach or youth leader is confronted by an irate parent as to "why isn't my Johnny or Mary playing or participating more," he or she is a politician or will quickly become one.

4) If you are married for any period of time and are still together and happy most of the time, yes, you had better be a really good politician (remember the shrewd and tactful definition of a good politician).
