Elephant beetle newest addition to San Antonio Zoo
The newest addition to the San Antonio Zoo comes from the old rainforests of Costa Rica, where it dines on rotting fruit and oozing tree sap.
Its scientific name is Megasoma elephas, but it's called the elephant beetle. Just look at it and you can guess why.
The insect is one of two elephant beetles currently at American zoos. Horticulture curator Martin Feather caught the recent addition to the Wild Wonders exhibit three weeks ago at night with mercury vapor lights that attract insects.
Feather and a colleague from the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly Conservancy in St. Louis caught two male beetles as part of an ongoing research project between the zoo, the conservancy and El Bosque Nuevo butterfly farm in Costa Rica.
Feather and his research partner submitted a proposal that was approved by the ministry of agriculture in the Costa Rican government.
“There's a demand from insect zoos in the United States for animals like this,” Feather said recently.
He went behind a thick display glass and brought the hard-shelled insect from a bed of decaying leaves to show visitors. In his palm he held the beetle, as long as a dollar bill and as thick as a hoagie. It weighs several ounces, can fly, and is black, but microscopic hairs give its hard shell a yellow tint.
He said the long horn sticking from its head is used to battle other males for females and to break bark and root for sap. Only males have horns, and they are two to three times larger than females.
It takes up to two years for the beetle to grow from egg to adult, Feather said. And then they enjoy adulthood for only up to four months. The beetles feed mainly on rotten wood and the larva mainly on rotten, decaying leaves.
A bowl of yellow goop consisting of maple syrup, agave juice and Malaysian mango pudding sits inside the beetle's enclosure. Feather said the mixture is a good substitute for the beetle's regular diet.
The long-term aim is to collect males and females and breed pairs at the San Antonio and Missouri zoos and in Costa Rica, Feather said.
Recovering forests aren't appropriate for them, he said, adding that once a breeding system is set up in Costa Rica, there would not be a need to tamper with it.
He said the insects aren't commonly available, but people like him are trying to make them more accessible through captured breeding by zoo professionals, not people taking the beetles from the wild.
