Camping trip ends in 'terrible' tragedy | All News Today
A camping trip to a music festival in regional Victoria has ended in tragedy with two people dead and three badly injured.
Police said five young people were on their way to an Ararat music festival when their four-wheel-drive, pulling a trailer with camping gear, left the road and slammed into trees off the Western Highway at Burrumbeet, about 20 kilometres west of Ballarat.
A passing motorist called triple zero just before 10.30pm last night.
A Rural Ambulance Victoria spokesman said two men, a 21-year-old from Bairnsdale and a 24-year-old from Windsor, died at the scene and three critically-injured people were rushed to hospital.
Several of the survivors were trapped in the vehicle for more than two hours.
A Northern Territory man, 22, a Melbourne man, 21, and a 16-year-old girl from St Kilda are being treated in The Alfred Hospital.
Police have described as “terrible” the scene confronting officers, as the vehicle left the road and ended up more than a metre off the ground perched in a tree.
“It was just a terrible scene, nobody wants to go and see that sort of stuff, especially when it’s young people on their way to a music festival,” Leading Senior Constable A.J. Taylor of the Ballarat Highway Patrol said.
Police are yet to determine whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, and who was driving the vehicle. They have appealed for witnesses to help with their investigation.
Senior Constable Taylor said the crash was a reminder for motorists to take care on the roads over the long weekend.
“Drivers have just got to take extra time, to drive within the conditions and the weather,” he said.
Police want to speak to a motorist driving towards the four-wheel-drive at the time of the accident, and other witnesses to come forward.
Victoria’s road toll now stands at 140, seven more than at the same time last year.
