Grayville HS team competes in annual Illinois Envirothon

Five Grayville High School students traveled recently to Monticello and competed with 14 other teams from across Illinois at the 17th Illinois Envirothon competition.

This two-day environmental competition for high school students determined which team advances to represent Illinois and compete at the Canon Envirothon for college scholarships and Canon prizes July 24-29 in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada.

The Canon Envirothon is North America's largest high school environmental education competition featuring teams from across the United States and Canada competing for prizes and college scholarships.

Team members from GHS included Austin Rahmoeller, Hunter Short, Jacob Judge, Marshall Schroeder and Dan Gray, along with their advisor, Marci Anderson, GHS ag teacher and FFA advisor. John Gray accompanied the team as its chaperone. Grayville placed eighth overall while obtaining the highest score on the wildlife category test.

The Envirothon program combines classroom learning with hands-on field experiences focused around five major topics - aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and a current environmental issue. This year's current issue was "Salt and Fresh Water Estuaries."

On the first day, the five-member teams rotated through five outdoor testing stations, where their knowledge was evaluated and scored through written examination. The competition also includes an oral presentation component that challenges students to effectively apply and communicate a solution to a complex environmental issue.

Locally, the Envirothon is sponsored by the White County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Shawnee Land Use Council.

Sackville High Prom | Kate & Mark » Caitlyn Colford Photography

I was never one of those girls who dreamed about a big gown and the prom at the end of High School. I didn’t even go to my own prom. The thought of wearing a dress made me cringe. I also thought I was way too cool for such an event with my blue hair (HA!). Of course I was wrong. Saturday I had the opportunity to take some photos of Kate for her prom. I was excited to capture some cute images. Kate’s date was her boyfriend, Mark, and they both looked great. I loved the color of Kate’s dress and the pretty flower detailing. They were surprisingly comfortable in front of the camera, which made my job easy (love when that happens). Congratulations, Kate! I hope it was everything you (probably) dreamed of!
