Esme Mulligan of Light Foyle fame passes

After being sold to the United States Light Foyle won a further 33 races with a career best time 1-54.8 set at Prairie Downs which is incidently the fastest time ever recorded at that track.

During his New Zealand career Light Foyle set a track record of 2:30.2 at Oamaru over 2000 metres in October 1986.

The U Scott full sisters Kinship and Scottish Scene were the foundation of a maternal line that is now developing respect.

From a short maternal line several more than useful horses have appeared. The maternal line now has lots of depth and several breeders throughout the country are now breeding from mares in the family with great suicess

The first horse of note bred by Mrs Mulligan was Trevor Hodgen ( Hodgen's Surprise - Scottish Scene).

Trevor Hodgen won 10 races here for the then Methven based owner trainer Mac Miller including the 1980 Asburton Cup and set several track records.

A half brother to Trevor Hodgen named Falcon Hanover ( Noodlum ) also won five races. 

It was however through the Local Light daughters of Kinship in Judy Light and Winnie's Rose that the breed would have the most success. Apart from Light Foyle Judy light also left Tiger's Gold ( Tiger Wave 5 wins).

Winnie's Rose left Captain Rainbow ( Bay Foyle 1-57.8) , Boyden Rose ( Boyden Hanover 1-59.7) and Liberty Print (Nero's BB 1-58.1). It is however her daughters which have proven to be broodmare gems. Liberty Print has left London Mews ( In The Pocket 1-51.6) while in turn her daughters have left Trojan ( Julius Caesar 7 wins) Omaha Beach ( Courage Under Fire 10 wins).

Another daughter Monreith ( Noodlum ) has left Joeseph Kuhtze ( Falcon Seelster 8 wins) Borderer ( WRH 7 wins ) and Covent Garden ( Holmes Hanover 12 wins).

Winning Franco ( Nero's BB ) has left Wandle lady ( OK Bye 1-53.8) and Frank Atom ( Soky's Atom 1-57.6) while daughter P K Bunny ( Fake Left ) has left Italian Stallion ( Christian Cullen 1-56.2 ,9 wins) .

Talented trotter James' Jazzmine ( Armbro Invasion - Miss Stanley 5 wins) is out of a grand daughter of Kinship.

Esme is survived by her husband Ray two sons and a daughter. Eldest son Malcolm has served on the committees of the Geraldine and Morrinsville Trotting clubs and had a stint as vice president of the Morrinsville Club. He was also a steward of the Auckland Trotting Club.

We just celebrated Memorial Day here in the United States. For those of you not familiar with this holiday, Memorial Day honors the men and women who gave their lives to serve our country. It is a day for remembrance and celebration. It is also the unofficial start to summer.

With the start of summer comes the beginning of picnic season. We Americans love our cookouts with a passion, and I am pretty sure it isn’t just Americans who enjoy a good cookout! It seems as if nearly every weekend is filled with some kind of outdoor social gathering in the summer – cookouts on the holidays, family reunions, block parties, birthday celebrations, tailgating at sporting events, or evening bonfires with neighbors. You name it, we can find an excuse to get out the grill and party!

Cookouts, while enjoyable, are a little rough on our waistlines. And they are even rougher on our wallets! It is standard etiquette when you are invited to a cookout that you bring a “covered dish” to share with the group. Too often, these dishes tend to be complicated and use a slew of expensive ingredients.

But it doesn’t have to be that way!

My own personal rule of thumb when I cook is that the dish needs to be easy to prepare, inexpensive to make, and taste delicious. Below are some suggestions of traditional picnic fare that won’t break the bank.

Deviled Eggs Ever go to a cook-out and glance at dish after dish of unhealthy, mayonnaise-laden options? Be the hero at your next gathering and bring a mixed fruit salad or sliced fruit as your contribution! Nothing tastes more refreshing on a hot day than some fruit. The trick to keeping this option frugal is to use whatever fruit is in season (in season = cheap) . If an item is not currently in season than do not use it. Of course, if you grow any fruit in your own garden then it is the obvious choice to use.

Spinach and Strawberry Salad cost savings ) and make garlic herb bread. This is sure to be a crowd pleaser. It is easy to transport and, best of all, is extremely inexpensive to make.

As you can see, attending cookouts need not break the bank. There are lots of frugal food options to make and share.
