Mike Yawn: The naked truth about fads

With strong media backing, Kelly took his show on the road.  In Houston, for example, he maintained his perch—a ten-inch disc fastened to the top of the pole—for 100 hours.  Subsisting on orange juice and an occasional Old North State cigarette to “calm his nerves,” Kelly finished his act by fighting a local boxer to demonstrate that he “wasn’t weary.” Opposition extended beyond campus administrators.  Boston’s Animal Rescue League threatened to call the law (“Mr. Withington, step away from the goldfish…”), and a state senator sponsored a bill outlawing the fad to “preserve the fish from cruel and wanton consumption.”  Health departments warned of tapeworms, an admonition somewhat undercut by a UCLA professor’s announcement that an adult male could gulp up to 150 goldfish without serious health repercussions. Girls, however, “seemed to welcome and even abet” the boys’ behavior according to Time magazine.  They threw lingerie from their windows, giggled, and then opened their dormitory doors.  In an early hint of the women’s movement, a “carload of squealing girls” turned the tables and raided a boys’ dormitory. Such festivities continued throughout the 1960s, becoming what one magazine called a “spring ritual.”  But as the times grew more tumultuous, panty raids lost their shock value.  Indeed, as young people became increasingly given to protests and riots, panty raids were seen as quaint, the innocent fun of yesteryear.  By the early 1970s, in fact, California Governor Ronald Reagan, responded to the People’s Park riots by lamenting, “How much further do we have to go to realize that this is not just another panty raid?” As it turns out, college students were willing to go a lot further.  In one of the most revealing of the nation’s fads, streaking became a common occurrence during sporting events, public ceremonies, and on college campuses in the 1970s.  The fad even made its way into the political world when a naked man ran through the Hawaii House of Representatives claiming to be the “Streaker of the House.” Perhaps the best known example of streaking, however, came during the 1974 Academy Awards.
