American Girl store opens in Tysons Corner

Josie Conyers of Falls Church will turn 8 years old on June 25, just in time to celebrate her birthday at the new American Girl doll store opening in Tysons Corner Center on Saturday.

�It�s all she wanted, so with some help from Grandma and Grandpa I am going to make sure she gets it,� said her mother, Sara Conyers, a single parent and an admitted doll-lover.

The new store expects to receive more than 10,000 visitors this weekend, according to Wade Opland, American Girl's vice president of retail.

Visitors to the mall's new two-level, 23,000-square-foot store will find the complete assortment of the company's popular historical and contemporary dolls and accessories.

The store includes a 110-seat bistro that can be rented for birthday parties, a live doll hair salon and a "Creativi-Tees" boutique where custom T-shirts can be created for the dolls.

"American Girl is all about celebrating girls," said American Girl spokesman David Cohen.

According to Cohen, about 20 million American Girl dolls have been sold through the company�s catalogue, retail stores and website since 1986.

That year, the company first introduced a line of historical female characters all 9 years old whose lives occur in different eras and locales throughout U.S. history.

The dolls come to life through a series of books, 18-inch dolls and accessories. Additional dolls were introduced periodically throughout the years; there are nine in total. Another series of more contemporary dolls also was introduced in 2001.

�From a Native American girl living in the Northwest in 1764 to a contemporary girl who helps others by sharing the aloha spirit of Hawaii, the 9-year-old fictional heroines live during important times in America�s past, providing �girl-sized� views of significant events that helped shape our country, and they bring history alive for millions of children,� Opland said.

In the book series that accompanies each character, Opland says each doll�s life deals with the specific issues of her time.

One of the company�s newest dolls, �Julie,� lives in 1974 San Francisco, eats fondue, and is undergoing a tough time as her parents are contemplating divorce.

�We have heard from moms that these are the issues they want us to write about,� Opland said.

Josie has a Julie doll, as well as two other historical dolls: Kirsten, a Minnesota pioneer from the 1880s, and Kit, a girl who has to rely on her wits as she grows up during the Great Depression.

American Girl Tysons Corner Opens June 18 To Much Fanfare

It’s not often a mall store grand opening makes the Washington DC area 6 pm news, but the latest American Girl doll store; American Girl Tysons Corner grand opening did just that today.

In what must have been a super slow news day (no new Wiener pictures), we learned that American Girl Tysons Corner store  is having it’s big Grand Opening day this Saturday, June 18.  You better get there early if you have little girls chomping at the bit to get their own American Girl doll. Before there was an American Girls Tysons Corner store, insane parents actually took their little girls on road trips to New York to get the American Girl experience.  So you know if they are willing to drive for hours to get an American Girl Doll, they won’t mind standing in a long line at American Girls Tysons Corner.  At least they’ll save a ton of money on gas.

For those, like me, who didn’t know what the heck the American Girl Doll experience is this paragraph is for you.  The American Girl Experience is not just a doll STORE.  Nope, in addition to doll shopping, your kids get doll dining, a doll hair salon, doll parties, and other doll special events.  It sounds like a parents worst nightmare combined with credit card companies wet dream.  Not only is it ultra time consuming, it is ultra expensive.

For those that haven’t managed to keep this grand opening event from their kids, the new American Girl Tysons Corner “experience is located at 8090L Tysons Corner Center, McLean, VA 22102.
