Apple rust, scab disease common
Due to periods of cool, wet weather, some apple and crabapple trees are infected with apple scab or cedar apple rust disease. Early symptoms include olive, brown, yellow or orange spots on leaves. Yellowing and browning of leaves and leaf drop may eventually occur.
These fungal diseases can be controlled with fungicides labeled for use on apples and crabapples. However, fungicide applications need to begin just as trees are leafing out in spring to be effective.
Fungicide applications made now will not cure established infections. They will only prevent new infections that might still occur. As we progress into late spring and early summer, the main infection period is almost past. This late in the season, it would be best to wait until early next spring to apply a fungicide.
Neither of these diseases is considered fatal to a tree. It would take a number of years of severe infection by either to harm trees. Infected leaves may drop, resulting in unsightly trees and poor fruit production. Early defoliation can also weaken trees, making them more susceptible to winter injury or other pests.
Apple scab overwinters on trees, so we often see this disease first. Apple scab appears as olive green to black spots on leaves. Heavy infections cause leaves to turn yellow or brown and drop from trees.
Cedar apple rust overwinters in galls on cedar trees and fungal spores are blown to apples or crabapples. Galls on cedar trees are fairly small, hard and brownish orange now. During rainy weather, they become bright orange and gelatinous. During this time, spores are released that infect apple and crabapple leaves.
Cedar apple rust appears as yellow spots on upper leaf surfaces. Eventually the underside of the leaf spot turns orange and becomes raised. Like apple scab, heavy infection causes leaves to turn yellow or brown and drop from trees.
Once leaves are infected and dropping off, fungicide sprays will not work. If fungicides are used, products labeled for use on these trees need to be applied, beginning just as the tree is leafing out in early spring and applications repeated according to label directions.
The best control of apple scab and cedar apple rust is planting resistant trees. There are many resistant cultivars available, so be sure to ask for them when selecting trees to plant in an orchard or landscape. More crabapples are resistant, but some apples also have resistance.
If a crabapple or apple tree did not have this disease the past few seasons, the tree is either resistant or fungicides were applied at the correct time.
