New St. Johns provost counting on math-like solutions to college issues

ST. AUGUSTINE — It's the second day on the job for St. Johns River State College's new St. Augustine provost, and Greg McLeod's office is looking bare.

A large model and a print of the St. Augustine Lighthouse in one corner are the only decorations, items that were there when he arrived. At least it gives the North Carolina native a feeling of home.

When he and his family were here in June during interviews, one of the places they discovered was the lighthouse.

"We climbed the lighthouse up to the top and then visited the museum," McLeod said Tuesday, adding the black-and-white striped lighthouse reminded him of the one at Cape Hatteras with the only difference a red top versus a black top.

"I promised the kids we'd do the Alligator Farm when we came back," he said. "But we're not going to do it soon. We still have boxes of stuff to clear out of our old house."

McLeod, 39, replaces Glen Moore, who retired this year.

The St. Augustine campus, one of three operated by the college, has an enrollment of 3,717, according to college officials.

McLeod's philosophy is simple: "It takes a college to educate a student."

"It also takes a community," he said. "Even thought we changed the name [from community college] we didn't change the fundamental purpose of the college."

He comes from a background of teaching ranging from K-12 to college as well as college administration including the last seven years at St. Petersburg College, where he held various administrative posts.

McLeod, who described himself as the "son of a preacher man and the grandson of a preacher man," grew up Raeford, N.C. He was used to hearing people say, " 'Well, Greg, you're next,' but I never felt the call in that arena."

His love was for mathematics and helping others appreciate the subject.

"I was a peer tutor. ... Growing up I was always tutoring others," McLeod said. "I remember going and buying magazines with logic problems."

His dissertation research continued the trend, focusing on "academic achievement for college students in remedial mathematics courses."

His "affinity" for math continues.

"I sit at the house and do math problems. I have Sudoku on my phone and play it. ... Math based in logic is part of what keeps me going. I'm just a numbers person."

He uses that appreciation of numbers in work also and plans on using campus data in making decisions to help increase the success for students attending SJRSC.
