Pay tribute to dad, and don't waste gas
The year is just about half gone, but three very important dates occur this month: Flag Day, Father's Day and the summer solstice.
Father's Day is June 19 this year. Father's Day is a day we should pay tribute to our fathers, those living and those who have gone on.
Spend a little time with fathers and grandfathers this year, and try to develop a starting or lasting relationship.
Typically, the first week in June is National Fishing Week. Check with Wildlife and Fisheries for specific dates.
What this means is the game warden won't write you a ticket for fishing without a license. They will get you for everything else, but not a lack of fishing license.
Also, June is the end of the year for all our hunting and fishing licenses. The 2010-11 licenses you bought might be good from issue date through June 30. Be sure you understand what you are buying. A fishing license bought today might expire at the end of the month or might not take effect until July 1. Ask when buying.
Vacation time is upon us again. A trip might be short this year due to the record high fuel costs.
So if we are planning a trip, let's look at what we might do to help our pocketbooks. The very first thing to do to your vehicle is change the air filter.
Folks, we live in a rural part of America sustained by agriculture, and one of its byproducts is dust. A restricted air filter literally will rob your vehicle's fuel mileage and engine power.
This is probably the single cheapest thing you can do to help your fuel mileage.
Next, check the air pressure in the tires. A tire aired up a little tight will roll easier and might pinch that other mile per gallon.
Watch the use of the vehicle's air conditioner compressor. This is probably the biggest gas-guzzling device on a vehicle. Pay close attention to the use of air conditioning and defrost functions of your vehicle.
Drive steady. Don't yo-yo drive. Use the vehicle cruise control. Later-model vehicle cruise functions via computers actually will monitor vehicle engine requirements.
Later-model vehicles are wind-tunnel designed to be somewhat aerodynamic with the windows up. Hey, every little bit helps.
As an example, I was invited to Missouri to turkey hunt several years ago. My only requirement was to pick up C. E. (Mac) McGee in Monroe and deliver him to West Plains, Mo., home of his younger son.
I filled up my gas tank in Sicily Island, drove to Monroe to pick up McGee, got northbound at about 62 or 63 miles per hour and put her on cruise. At Thayer, Mo., the first town across the Missouri/Arkansas line, we stopped for fuel.
